Emergency Services
The Justice Portfolio prevents and manages emergencies by:
- improving awareness of hazards and risks
- building readiness in Government and the community to manage emergency situations
- responding to incidents as quickly as possible
- supporting the recovery of communities in the aftermath of an emergency.
The Justice Portfolio is making sure that South Australia has the best possible organisational arrangements to deal with all kinds of emergencies and disasters and it will continue to be pro-active in its contribution to safeguarding South Australia from acts of terrorism. This requires agencies that contribute to emergency responses to share common goals and provide a seamless service to the public.
The Justice Portfolio educates the public to help reduce and where possible prevent the occurrence of emergency incidents.
The Justice Portfolio aims to :
- reduce the number of lives and property lost to emergency situations
- increase public awareness of emergency prevention
- increase the number of people participating in preparedness programs
- reduce the social, economic and environmental impact of emergencies.
Road Safety
South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service's Road Awareness and Accident Prevention Program
The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service's Road Awareness and Accident Prevention Program (RAAP Program) (www.samfs.sa.gov.au/community/raap.asp) helps to keep students safe on the roads with an honest and simple message about concentration and commonsense.
Local firefighters visit the school and talk to Year 11 or Year 12 students about:
- the dangers of excessive speed
- the possible consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- being a safe passenger
- the trauma suffered by all parties involved in both fatal and non-fatal road crashes.
See www.samfs.sa.gov.au/community/raap.asp for further information.
